In the era before large Nova Scotia soccer clubs like Suburban Football Club and Halifax City Soccer Club, there were local district/community clubs. One of the best Women’s team among those clubs in the early 1980’s, was the 1980 Sackville’s Under 16 Women’s soccer team. To say this team was dominant in that year would be an understatement.
This was the first women’s team from Sackville to ever represent the Province of Nova Scotia in the Canadian Championships. This team, made up of all local Sackville girls, won the Under 16 League Championship and then when it mattered most, truly took care of business in their Provincial and Atlantic Championship tournaments.
The team, led by head coach Earl Levandier, defeated Cape Breton, Halifax, Dartmouth and Lunenburg by a combined score of 21 to 0 to take the Provincial Championship! Next, they topped things off by defeating Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick in the Atlantic Championships by an even more impressive, combined score of 27 to 0. A remarkable result from a truly remarkable team.
Team members included: Kim Ashford, Michelle Barrett, Tina Broderick, Lisa Carberry, Darlene Harker, Tami Kempton, Diane Levandier, Karen McLean, Krista McCafferty, Gladie Mosher, Shelley Mosher, Rhona Paterson, Peggy Pilgrim, Kari Tjerno, Jo-Ann Turnbull, Dawn Whitworth.
The coaches included Head Coach Earl Levandier along with Assistants Dennis Levandier and Stephen Lunn.
