SACKVILLE SPORT HERITAGE HALL OF FAME SOCIETY ANNOUNCES 2025 INDUCTEES
The Sackville Sports Heritage Hall of Fame Society is pleased to announce its 2025 Inductees. Two individuals will be celebrated for their outstanding contributions to sport. The inductees are:
Steve Baur – Basketball
Steve Baur’s induction into the Sackville Sports Heritage Hall of Fame celebrates a career that has significantly impacted Canadian basketball on both national and international stages. Beginning his journey in Sackville, Steve’s dedication to the sport has propelled him to a pivotal role within Canadian basketball.
His early involvement included coaching minor basketball in Sackville, where he initiated a league to provide local youth with playing opportunities. He further developed his coaching skills at Acadia University, leading the Axemen to four consecutive USport Final 8 appearances. During his tenure at Acadia, his athletes achieved notable success, including: three CIS All-Canadian selections, two CIS All-Rookie awards, ten AUS All-Star selections, and six AUS All-Rookie awards. Additionally, he was named AUS Coach of the Year in 2014.
Steve’s contributions to Basketball Canada are extensive. He has served as a performance analyst, assistant coach, and associate coach at three Olympic Games (2016 Rio, 2020 Tokyo, 2024 Paris), three World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022), including a fourth-place finish, and five AmeriCups (2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023). He also served as the U18 Head Coach for Canada Basketball, leading the team to a silver medal. Further, he represented Canada as Head Coach at the Pan American Games and the Commonwealth Games.
His commitment to developing basketball at all levels is evident through his work as a coach for the Canada Games for Basketball Nova Scotia, as a mentor coach, and as Technical Director for the province. Currently, he serves as the General Manager for Canada Women’s Basketball, contributing to the program’s growth at both the 5v5 and 3×3 Olympic levels.
Steve’s career, rooted in Sackville, reflects a dedication to the development of Canadian basketball. It is hoped that his journey will inspire future generations of athletes and coaches, particularly those from smaller communities, to pursue their aspirations within the sport.
Steve Brown – Lacrosse
Lacrosse has been his LIFE!! There is absolutely nothing Steve has not accomplished in stabilizing the Creator’s Game in our province and community. For over 50 years, the sport of lacrosse has transformed Steve from an elite player to high performance coach, to a level 5 referee and now as a well-known administrator. His vision, passion, heart, commitment, and strong leadership were awarded in recognition by the Canadian Lacrosse Association in 1999, 2007, 2011 and then in 2013 with the QE2 Diamond Jubilee Award for outstanding contributions to building lacrosse.
As an athlete, Steve participated in numerous national championships including Founder’s Cup (Junior B) 1977, Maritime Junior Lacrosse Championships 1979, Presidents (Senior B) Cup in 1980,1982, 1990 and the Victory (Field Lacrosse) Cup 2001. As a coach his competitive spirit help guide his teams to local, provincial, and national titles including a fourth-place finish at the 1985 Canada Summer Games in Saint John, NB.
Steve’s love for the game was not only visible from the playing floor but continued in the Boardrooms. His passion to play the game in his home community helped create and co-found the Sackville Wolves (Lakers) Lacrosse Association in 1974 which has become the largest minor lacrosse program east of Quebec. His vision was not only for local growth, but Steve took on many hats establishing leagues and bringing in major tournaments. His resume includes Maritime Senior Men’s Lacrosse League Commissioner 1980-2001, Lacrosse Nova Scotia VP Operations 1993-2012, Metro Minor Lacrosse League Founder and active Board member 2000-Present, and East Coast Junior Lacrosse League Commissioner 2010-2013. Chaired provincial lacrosse tournaments Garnet Knight Memorial and NS Lobster Trap, Canadian National tournaments: 1986 and 2014 Founders Cup Junior B and 1999 Victory Cup Senior Men’s Field. Internationally, Steve was instrumental in bringing the 2007 World Lacrosse Championships to Halifax with eight countries represented as well as two exhibition National Lacrosse League (Pro) games in 2003 and 2006. It was this vision and opportunity to display our love for the game that the Halifax Thunderbirds Professional Lacrosse Club has established roots in our province.
There is a First Nations belief “once the game is in your blood, it’s there for life…” It has been and continues for Steve Brown.
An induction ceremony will be held on Wednesday, October 1st at 7 PM at the Sackville Kinsmen Club, 71 First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville.
There are currently 78 inductees in the SSHHoF. 35 Athletes, 36 Builders, and 11 Teams.
